“Next Big Thing”
The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will be EA’s next big thing for its mobile platforms, the publisher announced on Monday. It will be a “collectible role-playing game” that is expected to roll out in a limited, regional beta test this summer.
Developed by EA Capital Games, production of the new mobile game will be based in Sacramento, California – which happens to be the same studio that created the highly successful mobile collectible RPG, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes.
EA detailed on Monday that it has renewed a partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises; they will both be working on the Lord of the Rings mobile game with another company.
Malachi Boyle, Vice President of Mobile RPGs for Electronic Arts, said they were thrilled to partner with The Saul Zaentz Company and Middle-earth Enterprises to lead the next generation of mobile RPGs.
The VP also revealed that the team is made up of Lord of the Rings fans and The Hobbit to bring the magical world of JRR Tolkien into an immersive experience for players.
“The combination of high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations and stylized art immerses players in the fantasy of Middle-earth where they will face off against their favorite characters,” she said in a statement with Business Wire.
Deeply inspired by their appreciation of the world of Tolkien, Middle-earth Enterprises said it will be dedicated to working with companies that create quality products that adhere to green and sustainable business practices such as equality, fair trade and d other ethical acts.

“Conquering the Great Evils”
Heroes of Middle-earth will feature immersive storytelling, in-depth collection systems, turn-based combat, and a large roster of characters from across the worlds of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
Players will have the chance to take an epic journey, encountering iconic stories from Tolkien’s literary works and the classic “conquer the great evils” lurking in Middle-earth.
It should be noted that EA has already released several Middle-earth games, such as The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers released in 2002, and The Lord of the Rings: Conquest in 2009, which was available for Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, Windows. PCs and Xbox 360.
They also released the tower defense title of 2010’s The Lord of the Rings: Defense of Middle-earth.
In terms of mobile games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment also created five of the last six Middle-earth games found on Android and iOs.
The official release date for the new game has yet to be announced.
